Local governments are active in wellhead protection in South Dakota. Currently, communities or water systems in fifteen counties in eastern South Dakota have delineated source water/wellhead protection areas with extensive aquifer protection regulations in place. To manage the adopted protection areas, zoning ordinances (based on state authorization of wellhead protection guidlines) which limit or restrict high risk activities in and around the source water/wellhead protection areas have been passed by these counties.
