First Responder - 3/9/2010  Mobridge, SD

Mobrudge SpillMobridge Spill2

On the evening of 3/9/2010 a report was received that a Burlington Northern Santa Fe locomotive had leaked 4000 gallons of diesel fuel on the tracks near Lake Oahe in Mobridge. At that time it was not known if or how much of the fuel had reached Lake Oahe. The Mobridge Fire Department immediately responded to the incident.

Once on the scene, the Mobridge Fire Department quickly assessed the situation and determined there was an immediate danger that the diesel fuel would impact the Missouri River. They took proactive and appropriate response action, by berming across a road and blocking the culvert inlets on the road. Their quick response actions, along with rapid follow up response by the environmental cleanup company, potentially prevented thousands of gallons of diesel fuel from reaching Lake Oahe.
