Bakken/Williston Basin Crude Oil Rail Shipment Notifications

The United States Department of Transportation (DOT) issued an order on May 7, 2014 to all railroad carriers transporting in a single train 1 million gallons or more of crude oil from the Bakken shale formation in the Williston Basin. The DOT order states that a railroad is not required to file subsequent reports unless their number of million gallon, Bakken crude oil trains entering a state changes by 25 percent. The DOT order requires that railroad carriers notify the State Emergency Response Commission (SERC) for each state about the expected movement of such trains.
